وفقا لتقدير أجراه البنك الدولي عن بُعد عن الأضرار في سوريا التي خلفها الصراع على البنية التحتية في ست مدن، هي حلب ودرعا وحماة وحمص وإدلب واللاذقية، حتى ديسمبر/كانون الأول 2014، ألحق الصراع أضرارا واسعة بالممتلكات العامة والخاصة تتراوح قيمتها ما بين 3.7 و 4.5 مليار دولار.
وكانت الأضرار التي تسبب فيها الصراع في عام 2015 أكثر فداحة عن السنوات السابقة، وارتفعت تقديرات الأضرار في أحدث تقرير إلى ما بين 5.9 – 7.3 مليار دولار، وشهدت حلب وحدها نحو 60% من تكاليف الأضرار.
كما تُعد اللاذقية المدينة الأقل تأثراً، لكن تأثير الصراع عليها يظهر في زيادة الضغوط على مرافق البنية التحتية والخدمات جراء زيادة السكان الناجمة عن عمليات النزوح داخلياً. وفيما بين القطاعات، كان قطاع الإسكان الأكثر تضررا على الإطلاق.
وتقتصر تلك الأرقام على الأضرار المتعلقة بتكلفة النزوح والتشرد بالأسعار السابقة للصراع في المدن الست، وستزيد احتياجات التعافي وإعادة الإعمار في المستقبل أضعافا مضاعفة.
وقد أدى الصراع إلى سقوط الملايين في براثن البطالة وهوة الفقر.
وتذهب تقديرات المركز السوري لبحوث السياسات (SCPR) إلى أن أكثر من 60% من الأيدي العاملة (حوالي 3.5 مليون) باتت متعطلة عن العمل، وفقد نحو 3 ملايين وظائفهم نتيجة للصراع. وفي حين لم يجر البنك الدولي تقديرات لأوضاع الفقر في سوريا منذ عام 2007، يقدر المركز السوري لبحوث السياسات أن معدل الفقر الكلي بلغ 83% في عام 2014 (مقارنة بنسبة 12.4% في عام 2007).
اضطر الكثير من السوريين، بما في ذلك أطفال، للبحث عن عمل في القطاع غير الرسمي للتعويض عن فقدان الدخل لأسرهم.
وتذهب التقديرات إلى أن ثلثي السوريين يعيشون في فقر مدقع، وغير قادرين على تلبية الاحتياجات الاساسية الغذائية وغير الغذائية. وتتمثل الأسباب الرئيسية للفقر في فقدان الممتلكات والوظائف، وعدم التمكن من الحصول على الخدمات العامة، بما في ذلك خدمات الرعاية الصحية ومياه الشرب النظيفة، وارتفاع أسعار الغذاء.
وتعد معدلات الفقر الأعلى في المحافظات الأكثر تضررا من الصراع، والتي كانت في السابق الأكثر فقرا في البلاد.
